If we’re talking about mainstream American cars from the 1970s, the one that most often appears on “ugliest car” lists is the AMC Pacer.
Why many people consider it ugly:
- Its bubble-like greenhouse made it look almost all glass.
- The body was unusually wide for such a short car.
- The proportions seemed awkward compared to traditional American sedans and muscle cars.
- It looked futuristic in a way that many buyers in the 1970s weren’t ready for.
Other strong contenders include:
- Ford Mustang II — criticized for shrinking the Mustang into an economy-car shape.
- Chevrolet Chevette — bland styling and economy-car proportions.
- Oldsmobile Omega — often seen as generic and uninspired.
- Dodge Aspen — awkward lines and poor build quality hurt its reputation.
That said, my pick for the worst-looking American car of the decade would actually be the AMC Gremlin. Its abruptly chopped-off rear end made it look like someone cut the back half off a normal car.
Ironically, both the Pacer and Gremlin have become cult classics today because they’re so unusual and instantly recognizable.
