Artie, the Strongest Man in the World

Artie, the Strongest Man in the World

Artie, the Strongest Man in the World, is a fictional superhero from the 1990s Nickelodeon series The Adventures of Pete & Pete. Played by Toby Huss, Artie is the eccentric personal superhero of Little Pete Wrigley, blending surreal humor, earnest mentorship, and comic absurdity that made the show a cult favorite.

    Key facts

    • Portrayed by: Toby Huss
    • First appearance: “Artie” short (1990)
    • Series: The Adventures of Pete & Pete (1992–1996)
    • Residence: Portable “porta-house” in fictional Wellsville, New York
    • Catchphrase: “For I am Artie — the strongest man… in the world!”

    Character and origins

Artie’s origin is deliberately unexplained, adding to his mystique. He was introduced as Little Pete’s “personal superhero,” appearing in early shorts and through the show’s first two seasons. His flamboyant costume—a red-and-blue striped shirt made of “60% titanium and 40% cotton”—and his Buddy Holly–style glasses became instantly recognizable. Though possessing apparent superhuman powers, Artie often served as a symbol of childlike imagination rather than literal strength.

    Powers and personality

Artie’s feats include skipping stones on Neptune, moving houses by inches, and helping Little Pete “beat up the Atlantic Ocean.” He teaches kids to exercise, eat well, and “not eat metal.” His quirks—like shouting “Pipe!” or savoring the scent of deflating tires—underscore his mix of sincerity and absurdity. Despite his bombast, he represents encouragement, independence, and creativity for the children of Wellsville.

    Departure and legacy

In the two-part episode “Farewell My Little Viking,” Artie realizes his protégé no longer needs him and leaves Wellsville—a bittersweet conclusion to his mentorship. Created originally by Huss for a No Shame Theatre sketch, the character embodies Pete & Pete’s surreal, heartfelt tone and remains one of Nickelodeon’s most distinctive cult heroes.
